Science Fair Investigations

Kate Vaughan —

When you think of Science do you think of crazy explosions, bubbling test tubes, ghastly gases or bizarre biological mutations????? Well think again, because there is more to all of this than meets the eye. It’s called Fair Testing.

During the first weeks of term two think Tank students have been learning about scientific principles of reactions, changing states of matter, and the very important concept of variables. They have been taking part in experiments to build their knowledge and curiosity of science.

Students are getting very excited about the upcoming South Canterbury Science Fair in week 6 of term three, which will take place after our own event in week five.

They are learning about how Fair Testing makes Science real and not guesswork, and of course how to generate a good question to investigate using curiosity based thinking, and observing something interesting or puzzling in the world around them.

They will follow the Scientific Method to structure their investigations: Observe, Question, Hypothesis, Planning/Materials, / Experiment, Analysis, Conclusion.

Our topics are wide ranging and include ideas about food, sport, air, speed, sound, flight, the environment, our senses, and many many more.

Look out for experiment work being done in the classroom, playground, and at home…you could even be involved in one, whether you are aware or not!!!

Students are looking forward to sharing their investigations later with our school community in term three.
