In A Spin - Radial Symmetry

Kate Vaughan —

Year 7 and 8 classes have been exploring what happens when we create symmetry around a point. Students have identified how this can be viewed out and about in our world and applied some creative force to blend colour and form to create individual and collaborative artworks.

After reviewing ordinary symmetrical shapes as our maths topic, Think Tank students decided to take up the challenge of finding out about rotational or radial symmetry. They used drawing and collage to organise their thinking. The use of limited colour schemes helps show clearly the beautiful patterning that radial symmetry offers us as a way to create artworks.

The use of simple origami shapes to use as components in their collage was a fun way to start.

Extension activities for the unit included discussions of perceptions of beauty relating to symmetry, including architecture, design ideas (eg car wheels), and identifying spaces in our society and environment that celebrates radial symmetry.

There are countless ways to create radial symmetry artworks….so have a go. Get yourself into a spin !!!!
