Trip to Richard Pearse Airport and Aviation Museum

Nikki Geddis —

On Tuesday 7th November Rooms 8, 9 and half of 12 went to the Timaru Airport and Aviation Museum.

Unfortunately our initial trip was postponed due to bad weather but our second trip was a great success thanks to some sunny weather. We arrived at the airport and we were greeted by Keely, a museum educator, who explained the plan for the day and went through a health and safety briefing.

We were split into 3 groups to see 3 main aspects of the airport: the aviation musuem, the control tower and Richard Pearse display and the aero club. We were very lucky to have wonderful people at each of these 3 stations who gave up their time to talk to us about planes, flying and the history of flight in our area.

Our first activity was to watch the arrival of an Air NZ flight but unfortunately it was diverted to CHCH due to mechanical issues. We then split into our 3 groups and each group went to one of the stations. After our first activity we had our lunch and we got to watch some smaller aircraft taking off and landing.

After lunch we went to our next station. During this time the Air NZ flight arrived so we were able to see the plane land - very exciting! We then moved to our last station. The Air NZ flight was getting ready for take-off so we gathered to watch it leave. We waved goodbye and watched it head off to Wellington - it was very loud!

We completed our last station and then hopped back on the buses and headed back to school. It was a very memorable trip and we all learned a lot. A big thanks to the parent helpers who joined us on our trip.

Leo H - I liked being able to go inside the functional plane at the Aero Club.

Areta - I enjoyed going in the helicopter at the aviation museum.

Ana Luiza - I liked learning how planes work.
