Bula Vinaka!

Corinna Brook —

Last week it was Fijian Language Week.

It's so important that we celebrate the different cultures we have in Bluestone School.  Last week the Te Tahi students celebrated Fijian Language week:

"Fijian Fish" was our poem of the week.  It was about 8 colourful fish swimming in the sea so blue.  We learnt how to count up to 8 in Fijian and discovered that some numbers are the same, or similar to, the numbers in Te Reo Maori/Samoan/Tongan.  Here they are: lua, rua, tolu, va, lima, ono, vitu, walu.

Students made stuffed fish drawing their fish onto 2 large pieces of paper and cutting them out.  A teacher then stapled the fish together so that students could stuff their rubbish inside!  They look vinaka! (good)

For Te Tahi's Discovery Time their were many different activities to choose:

  • Colouring in the Fijian Flag.

  • Creating a ‘salusalu’ which is a Fijian necklace/garland meaning love, family and respect.

  • Creating a sea creature out of modelling clay.

  • Making a fish.

  • Ordering the Fijian numbers.

  • Making an ‘itsy-bitsy’ book about Fijian animals and birds.

  • Learning to play Fijian ‘paper scissors rock’.

  • Creating a palm tree using shapes.

  • Making a turtle.

  • Fijian number bingo.

  • Making paddle boats for the water.

  • Collaborative art making a ‘masi’ (Fijian tapa cloth)
