The Legend Of Aoraki

Janet Richards —

In Room 7 we have been learning about the traditional Kai Tahu legend of Aoraki .

IN Art we have created a mural for our classroom wall which illustrates aspects of the legend. Each part of the mural was created by two chldren working together. We are very proud of our effort.

For writing we have created individual books retelling the story in our own words. Here is an example.

Aoraki

by Shandri

Once there was four brothers who lived up in the heavens. One day Aoraki, the eldest brother said, “I'm so sad that Dad (Raki) left Mum” One day up in the heavens Aoraki said, “Let's go down to earth and persuade Dad to come home to our Mum”.

Then they saw Dad (Raki) with another lady(stepmother) but they couldn't split them up. They wanted to go back to the heavens to comfort their Mum but before they got there a massive wave came crashing onto the brothers and their brown wooden waka! They all fell out like a seal diving in. The waka got stuck in between and in front of a rock!.

The eldest brother Aoraki shouted, “Help! help! Somebody help us!" But nobody came. So they grabbed the brown wooden upside down waka like you're catching a fish. One of the brothers said, “Oh no what are we going to do?"

”I don't know, but look at my hair. It's turning white,” said one of the other brothers!

“Look at my face it's turning to stone,” said one of the other brothers.

“So is mine” said another brother. So they all froze to ice like a person in very cold water and turned to stone. So that was that.

So that's why we have the big Mount Aoraki on our wall. Do you think that the story of Aoraki is real or not?. I think it's real because God made the earth or this wouldn't of happened.
