Literacy, Mathematics & Inquiry Learning
Our targeted teaching for Literacy and Mathematics is linked to authentic contexts, the school values and our term theme.
There is a relentless focus on helping our students to develop key literacy and numeracy skills and equipping them to be critical thinkers with sound communication problem-solving skills.
In each of our teaching teams we embrace the concept of AKO as we work alongside our learners to help them reach their potential as learners.
"In te ao Māori, the concept of ako means both to teach and to learn. It recognises the knowledge that both teachers and learners bring to learning interactions, and it acknowledges the way that new knowledge and understandings can grow out of shared learning experiences. This powerful concept has been supported by educational research showing that when teachers facilitate reciprocal teaching and learning roles in their classrooms, students’ achievement improves".
(Alton-Lee, 2003).
Big themes also provide the inquiry context for rich learning around Social Sciences, Science, Health and Technology. Our students follow the Breens Inquiry Model and SOLO Taxonomy tools are utilised to assist students to as they tune in, question, gathering & sort, collect information and think deeply.
Workshops and SPIN (special interest) lessons are provided in Languages, Drama, Dance, Te Reo Māori, Applied Mathematics and other high interest topics driven by the interests of the students and strengths of our teaching staff.
