Wearable Arts 2022

Nikki Clarke —

"We are so happy and proud of ourselves to get placings and recognition from the judges and everyone who has supported our journey."

Wearable Arts 2022 was amazing!

We entered so many garments and had over fifty kids participating, the most ever! It was definitely one of the busiest times of the school year. It took us approximately twelve weeks to make all of our garments, whether we were in groups of two or up to five, we still had the same amount of work to do and the same deadline to meet. All kids spent hours and hours on their designs, using the weekends and after school sessions to finish their garments on time and to the highest standard they could! The after school and weekend sessions offered to us ranged between two and five hours and are owed especially to our amazing art teacher Mrs Turpin who has had to put up with all sixty of us for this time! She is truly amazing and has supported us with a lot of expertise and a lot of help. We don't know how she did it!

There were four categories we could enter: Larger than Life ( needing a transformation on stage), Myths, Legends and Fantastic Beasts, Futuristic and Open. We then went to the Christchurch Town Hall to have our photoshoot. We had to be at school from 7:00 to 7 :30 for the models to get their hair and make up done. We had very particular ideas about what we wanted. As our garments were so oversized, Hollie asked her Dad if we could use one of his trucks from his trucking company and drive the costumes to the Town Hall for us. Luckily he said yes as we don’t think they would have fitted in cars. The people who were driving the truck showed up at 7:15 in the morning and as everyone was getting ready, they very carefully, one by one took the costumes and loaded them into the truck. It was a real sight to see all the costumes lined up in the corridor. There was so much colour, variety, and difference throughout the costumes, which I think made them all special. We did extremely well on the day and ended up with really outstanding results!

We are so happy and proud of ourselves to get placings and recognition from the judges and everyone who has supported our journey. We have loved every second of it and have learnt a lot about art and the different techniques you can use to give your Garment a certain look, whether that be drying paint to then glue onto our costumes, tape casting a bodice or paper macheing pieces of our garments; all of these skills will help us in the future to help us with hopefully some more wearable arts garments to come! We are very grateful towards all our teachers and everything they have supplied us with. We say a big THANK YOU from all the wearable art students. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!
