Winter Sports Update 2023

Courteney Currey —

Tuesday Sport/Hauora

It has been great to see how many of the winter children really give winter sports a go, getting some wins and demonstrating good sportsmanship, especially when there is a loss. We are nearly half way through the competition!

Alongside that, it has been wonderful to hear all the good news happening back at school with the students loving lacrosse, handball, table tennis, line dancing, hip hop dancing and heaps more activities that keep the children active.

The next rotations for the Tuesday haoura time will be coming up for selection soon, which will consist of martial arts (which will have a small fee), Canterbury Rugby give it a go, HITT bodywork, football drills, jump jam, line dancing and calisthenics.

Football

So far this year football has been a great time for everyone and I like how no matter what the scores have been we have all come back with a smile on our faces. Some of the best moments have been giving and getting advice from our teammates cheering each other on and just having fun with each other. Along with all of that, it's also been also challenging because we are all playing with people we have not played with before but I think it's a really good thing because we're always learning from each other. Overall I think football has been a great experience so far and would really advise people to join a winter sport.

Rugby

The Breens rugby team has gone against the following schools, Casebrook, Kirkwood and Heaton along with some shocking scores. The Breens team is going all out in their games. They have won all their games by showing the Breen's values on and off the field. In the first rugby game all of us got player of the day. In the second game, Zeke was the player of the day and in the third game, Loka got the player of the day. We are all enjoying going down to Hagley every Tuesday and look forward to playing against more opponents.

Netball

We have really enjoyed our season so far and have had some fantastic wins. We meet new people every week, and sometimes see our friends from other schools.   The Blue, White and Red teams have training on Wednesday mornings, and Green and Gold have their training on Thursday lunchtimes. We are all putting in commitment at trainings to improve each week.  Players of the day for the recent round were: BLUE: Paige, WHITE: Annabel S, RED: Sam B, GREEN: Jacque GOLD: Katelyn and Kahlia.
I think that all the netball players have enjoyed their games so far this year, and we can't wait for the remainder of the season.

Basketball

Friday night basketball has been loads of fun with heaps of people joining in and giving it a go. Everyone has been showing good sportsmanship and fair play. Everyone has been sharing the ball and using teamwork by not getting angry if someone misses a shot or turns the ball over. Overall it has been good to play Friday basketball and have fun.

A summary of the first half of the Basketball season

So far this term we have seen lots of good basketball played by all of our Breens teams. There has been great hustle on defense and we have been taking high percentage shots. The players who are consistently at training have made great improvements in their game. People who are playing for the first time are having lots of fun and are getting a lot better and doing great with their sportsmanship.

This year there are five teams:

About the teams:

The Breakers are doing well and are playing great. They have been driving to the hoop and doing the fundamentals well. Some of them are playing as a “Triple Threat” really well.

The Bullets have done well recently and are starting to play good team basketball. They have started to click as a team together.

The Bulldogs have won every game and are hoping to win their 6th game in a row. They are obviously doing very well in their start to the basketball season. Hopefully they can keep it up.

The Bulls have been up and down with their games but keeping the sportsmanship up and they are continuing to improve! They played the Braves in their first game of the round had a win! They are doing their best every game they play.

The Braves have been playing well. In our first game we played one of our Breens teams (The Bulls) and we were close. We have been very competitive in all of our games. We recently won 2 games and had some amazing shots and rebounds. We have a very strong girls team and they are working hard with teamwork, perseverance and keeping the focus on fair play!

The basketball season has a break from next week. We will start up again in term three (the first week back!) and play for another six weeks. Good luck everyone!

Waterpolo It has been brilliant to see the commitment from the water polo children. They have been doing a very good job with going to their Sunday training and games on Monday or Friday. Teachers have enjoyed going to watch and see how intense it does get! There will be an upcoming bake sale on the 28th of June to fundraise for the water polo teams' equipment and their trip to Dunedin, there will be a reminder in the notices and posters are up in the school!

Cross country With the help of two sports leaders (Rylan and Isaac) and myself, we have created an in-school course for students who would like to run 3km. It was pleasing to see forty five students who volunteered to run this and give it a go. Following the placings from Wednesday, I would like to congratulate the following 18 students:Rylan, Isaac, Caelyn, Rupert, Jack P, Rylan, Tiago, Jordin, Koko, Neve, Sammie, Phoenix, Hunter, Hamish, Liam, Alfie, Jamie and Fin. These students will receive a letter inviting them to attend the CAIMS Cross Country event.
