Cricket boys flying high!

Jacob Frost —

Active Post Canterbury Cricket Tournament

In the first game, the Breen's Brothers came up against  Christchurch South. They won the toss and elected to bowl. They set to the field not knowing what to expect, but the two opening bowlers (Nicholas Murphy & Logan Clark) had the opposition struggling at 4 wickets down for no runs. The boys kept the surge going and eventually bowled Chch South out for 19 runs. They walked out feeling reasonably confident that they would secure the win. Lucky the other two batsmen chased this total down in just under 3 overs.

Next was St Thomas, the boys had played this school the Tuesday prior and had beaten them comfortable but would they be able to do it again? The answer was yes. The luck started when we won the toss and elected to bat first.  Under pressure, Flynn Bainbridge delivered with outstanding 50. They finished the innings with about 150 on the board. The Brothers started well once again putting the other team under pressure. At the end of the day, they were 2 from 2 and Mrs. Glen had a 100% coach winning record.

Day Two

In the 3rd game, The Brothers came up against Sumner School. They lost the toss, but got what they wanted and were sent in to bat. A great 127 first wicket stand between Connor Stewart (57) and Flynn Bainbridge (71) to get there team off to a flyer. They finished on 185 which was one of the highest scores in the tournament so far. They walked out to bowl pretty confidently and were fairly happy after their effort with the bat. They then proceeded to bowl Sumner School out for 86 and were through to the semi-finals.

Semi-final time. The boys were playing Cobham and they are known for their cricketing ability. Once again they won the toss and decided to bowl. They had the best start possible getting out Cobham's star batsmen Ben Trillo first ball of the game (he had made 94 not out that morning) Cobham proceeded to bat well but with Breens taking wickets at regular intervals they only just managed to scrape through to 100. The boys were nervous because they knew Cobham had an incredible bowling line up and 100 wasn't such a small score as it sounded; due to the long grass and long boundaries. Flynn and Connor opened once again and started to struggle to score runs. This put pressure on the other batsmen and with 12 balls left and only 1 wicket in hand Nicholas Murphy and Hunter Stewart put on a great partnership (with Hunter getting 36*) they proceeded to win the game.

We'd like to say thank you on behalf of the cricket team to Mr. Collins and all the parents who provided transport and their time.  We now look forward to playing St Andrew's College in the final in a few weeks time.
