Breens Pop-up-Penguin

Sarah Turpin —

We held the Pop-up-Penguin Art Competition in Term 3 to find the winning design to be painted on our very own penguin.

Competition was fierce. Rebecka (Hīrere) took out first place, Cam (Māpuna) came second, and Yanzie (Hīrere) placed third. All designs submitted were of a high standard.

Late in Term 3 Rebecka, and her crew of fellow talented artists Gina and Sarah, started painting Rebecka's design onto our penguin, named Nik. A few additions were made to the original design to cater for the size  of Nik, making sure the design enhanced the form of the sculpture.   The girls did a fabulous job firstly painting a base layer and then adding detail and depth to the design.

Aptly titled Cycle of Beauty Rebecka chose to paint wildlife in the vast ice of Antarctica, using lots of pinks and purples to reflect the colours of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Shades and tints of blue were used alongside white for the ice and water.

Wild in Art are setting up the Pop-up-Penguin trail around Ōtautahi and from 29th November until the end of January, you can go on a Penguin hunt. Check out www.popuppenguin.co.nz for a link to download the Pop Up Penguins app to learn more about each penguin and the artist while following the trail . As soon as we have the location of our penguin Nik, we will let you all know.

Congratulations to Rebecka, Gina and Sarah for the most beautiful penguin they created. Thank you for sharing your brilliance, bravery, beauty, boldness  and belonging with us.
