Kapa Haka/Pasifika - Cultural Festival and Tūhono 2020

Grant Cattermole —

It has been a busy term for our Kapa Haka rōpū and Pasifika group, with two stellar performances at Cultural Festival and Tūhono.

"Kia hora te marino - May be the calm be widespread"

So went the theme of this year's Cultural Festival, with this year's Cultural Festival sadly being the last. Te Puna Waiora o Hereora had the tremendous honour of being the final group to perform on the final night of the festival, ending over three decades of one of Christchurch's premiere celebrations of cultural identity with a rousing rendition of our school haka.

The Kapa Haka rōpū have remained steadfast in their passion throughout a year of setbacks and postponements, and the hard work of the Pasifika group, many of whom also performed Kapa Haka, has endured through all challenges.

Kapa Haka followed this up with a powerful performance at Tūhono the following Sunday, photos of which have been attached to this article. As always, they performed with pride, power, and perseverance, and secured Best Female Whakamihi, Best Uniform, and a three-way tie for Best Female Leader.

There will be another opportunity to see the Kapa Haka rōpū in action on Sunday 22nd November at the Celebrate Bishopdale Festival, which is being held at Bishopdale Park, aka the Elephant Park. The rōpū is due to perform at 12:10pm, and entry is entirely free. We hope to see you there!
