Digital Tuakana Teina at Bishopdale Community Preschool

Haley Taylor —

Tuakana Teina is a teaching and learning approach drawn from Te Ao Māori. It refers to the relationship between an older person (tuakana) and a younger person (teina). The meaning is literally “older sibling-younger sibling”

The Breens Intermediate School students (Tuakana) went into the Bishopdale Community Preschool to share their knowledge of the digital technologies with the preschoolers (Teina) and to learn about how younger students learn and interact.

They had a variety of digital tools to share with the preschoolers:

Marbotic - an ipad tool which helps with shape, number and letter recognition.

OSMO - an ipad tool which uses the camera to recognise placement of shapes.

Quiver - an activity where students can colour in a sheet and use an ipad to turn this into augmented reality.

The Breens Intermediate School students loved this opportunity and found it amazing to see how well the preschool children could recognise the shapes and letters.
