Tōtara Mai and BEST Badges

Breens Intermediate —

Tōtara Mai is a home learning programme designed to interest and extend students.

We expect all students to engage with the programme where they strive to attain badges by completing five tasks for each of the Breens Values.

Tōtara Mai is a home learning programme designed to interest and extend students.   This programme is support by the classroom teachers and children are encouraged to pursue tasks at home and school.

Every child receives a Tōtara Mai booklet and has access to all the online resources and task cards that relate to each value.

Tōtara Mai tasks are co-constructed by staff and students each year and children are supported to design their own high interest tasks where possible. Tōtara Mai is all about students leading and extending their own learning.

When students have completed a task to their very best ability, the tasks are checked and signed off by the classroom teacher and student leader.

When five tasks are completed and signed off, students make an appointment with Mr Maclennan or Mrs Clarke to talk about their learning and show their evidence before being awarded with a badge to wear.

"Everything that a tōtara is and represents, bring that whakaaro with you in your mahi"

BEST Badges

The BEST programme sits within our weekly E&E (Extend and Enrich) day on Fridays.  All children are encouraged to strive for BEST badges, based on a wide range of high interest and engaging learning opportunities right across our school.
