Free Healthy Lunch Programme

Rebekah McLeod —

Order forms went home last week. These need to be returned before the end of the term.

Research shows that Regular nutritious food is vital for children’s physical, mental and educational development. It affects their ability to focus, concentrate and learn.

We are therefore extremely excited to be involved in the healthy school lunches programme for 2021. This initiative provides free school lunches and snacks for students for the 5 days that they are at school.

The menu will change day to day, therefore your child will be provided with a variety of healthy food on a daily basis.

The order form for this programme has been sent home. If you have not received one please contact your child's class teacher. The form needs to be completed and returned to school before the end of the year. You need to complete an order form for each child that you have at school. On the form you need to select whether your child will have the vegetarian or regular option. Any other food requirements also need to be included.

We know that children’s tastes vary. It can be challenging to provide healthy food that children want to eat and getting children to enjoy new foods can take time. The Ministry of Education has worked closely with the Ministry of Health, nutrition, and health experts to establish guidelines, for schools and work with schools and suppliers on how they can gradually introduce new foods and make lunches healthier. Trying new foods with their peers can also be a motivation to give new things a try.

We are excited to see what benefits this initiative will bring for our tamariki.
