Kaiako —

Kākano

This week in Kākano we have been celebrating le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Samoan Language Week). We were lucky to have some special guests pop in and teach us about aspects of the Samoan culture and language. Mrs Togiaso's Dad shared the story of Sina and the Eel then he opened a coconut for us. Togamau's Aunty (Lavi) showed us some beautiful photos of their recent trip to Samoa, and taught us about the different animals in Samoa. Kymani's Dad (Jeremiah) came in and shared some of his artworks and patterns he uses in his Samoan tattoos. We also had fun drawing our own patterns with Jeremiah. Fa'afetai lava to all of our Kākano 'aiga!

Pītau 1

Many of us in Pītau 1 have been really engaged in the Arts this week! We explored the role Taniwha play in protecting our earth during our Diving Deeper session with Ms Nicholls. We explored different art tools, such as indian ink, pastels and dye, to create our own paintings of taniwha.

We have also been learning all about fractions. Samoan language week was a great opportunity to use our growing knowledge of fractions and symmetry to create a class siapo.

Pītau 4

Pītau 4 has been learning about the different ways animals communicate, including visual, smell, and tactile methods. Our visit to Willow Bank was a fantastic experience where we explored, observed, and listened to how animals interact with each other. We loved seeing the unique ways animals communicate firsthand.

Koru 5

Over the past few weeks Koru 5, have embarked on an exciting journey of exploration and discovery in the realm of measurement. Our adventures have taken us on a captivating exploration of converting metric units, scrutinising the size of paua shells to ensure they adhere to legal standards and comparing the precision of different scales. We have also delved into the fascinating world of estimating using non-standard units used by Māori to measure such things as tattoos, waka and other structures.

In literacy we have honed our skills in sourcing and utilising information from a variety of media to craft our very own information reports. This emphasis on independent research and reporting has empowered us to express our findings and insights in a compelling and informative manner.
