A Word from the Principal

Scot Kinley —

Kia Ora , Talofa Lava, Welcome.

As we work through the issues that arise from Friday’s incidents we are seeing that everyone has a different reaction to what happened. It is quite complex and challenging therefore to present a simplistic schoolwide approach. We are speaking of love, unity and relationships as common themes but underneath that is a vast variety of low to high level interventions.

If you would like advice or support please feel free to contact the office and they will direct you to the appropriate person.

We are planning, but still a little unsure of the best timing and response that is appropriate, to give a gift to those affected. Any ideas would be appreciated.

We are going ahead with the lockdown review but at this stage are very unlikely to hold an actual drill. The children will still have a debrief and discussion led by our reviewers and hopefully some light-hearted practice as we need to prepare for the hopefully unlikely event where we may need to go into lock-down at playtime and the children may not be with their regular teacher.

We have food and water supplies as well as ordered mobile toilets for a few areas in the school.

I am sure that you are all well aware of the Measles situation in Christchurch and how that may affect you and your family. For us it is business as usual but there are a few key points to consider.

  •  Is your child immunised and other member’s of your family including yourself ?
  • If you suspect you may be infected please contact your GP and keep your child off school until you are certain

Some of our children are very vulnerable to measles and it is a major health threat to them. We are therefore very careful to be watchful and follow the most cautious plan in the possible situation that measles is contracted by anyone involved with the school.

The plan to hold a Net safe parent meeting is now going ahead on the new date of April 3rd between 2 pm and 3 pm at school. We have invited a trained experienced facilitator from the North Island to run this course and I highly recommend all parents trying to make it. The internet is a great invention but we must be aware of the potential dangers , some that were highlighted last Friday.

Our original focus was on cyber bullying but the presentation will cover a few other things as well now.

Life has certainly been busy lately. Please be aware of how recent events may affect all of our emotions, energy levels and general outlook and try to walk slowly and breathe, I know I certainly am.

Have a great week.

Scot Kinley
