Trip to the Christchurch Art Gallery
Expressing Ourselves through the 100 Languages
As part of the process of getting to know each other, it is also important to dive deeper into knowing ourselves. Taking the time to look at ourselves to notice, appreciate, and celebrate all the wonderful things that make use unique, is also great for our wellbeing.
Last Friday, Pītau 1 attended one the Education Sessions at the gallery. Bianca, the gallery educator, introduced us to a number of famous portraits, including Charles Fredrick Goldie and Rita Angus. She taught us to look closely and observe the details that give us clues about what is happening in the life of the person in the portrait.
“It looks like they have been painted.”- Shyla
“It looks realistic.” - Mason R
“Like an olden day lady.”-Riley
“Are they ancestors?.” - Shyla
“Why do you think the artist has painted a portrait of them?” -Bianca
“They died many years ago so we need to remember them.” - Kyra
Bianca then took us through the steps for creating portraits of ourselves using black ink, just one of the many 100 ways children can use art to express themselves.
Thank you to all our wonderful parent helpers. Without your time and support, trips like this wouldn’t be able to happen! Check out the Art Gallery with your family - it’s free!
