Mathswell

Lizzie Blackwell —

Mathswell is an annual competition run by the Wellington Maths Association. Students from year 5 to year 11 are invited to participate in teams of 6. Mathswell aims to promote the enjoyment of Mathematics and challenge our students. A team of Takahē tamariki attended Mathswell.

This is what they have to say about it.

On Thursday we went to Mathswell. First, those of us who had arrived waited around and played with the calculators. When they got there we decided who was doing a test first.

Multichoice:

When we started we were given 3 sheets and told to do 1,2,6,7,11,12 in the first five minutes. When that time was up we weren’t allowed to do any of the first one and moved on to the other questions.

Word problems:

For that one, we only got 1 question at a time and had 2 tries for each question.

Then they announced the winners. We didn’t win anything except we got our participation pens.

It was really fun and I hope to go again next year. - Lucy

I think that it set a good example for my first Mathswell and I definitely think I would like to go back. I had a good time especially as on each round we were on the leaderboard at least twice. It was cool, I suppose because in the last round, we finished in 12th place out of 50 teams. I liked it because the questions were not easy. - Yasia
