Happy Harvest at Broomfield School

Aisling O'Connor —

Our Year 4 students joined forces last Friday to harvest their produce from the vegetable garden.

Squeals of delight were heard ringing across the back field as large potatoes were unearthed from the soil. "I've found another potato". " "Look at the size of this one". The children dug with their hands and worked together to harvest the potatoes from our raised bed and from their 'potato tyre stacks'. Crates of potatoes were then carried to Tī Kōuka where Marie Reveley and the Year 5s shared out the harvest into packages for the children to take home. How do you like to eat potatoes?  The preferences ranged from roast to mashed, sliced, and of course hot chips!

As well as a bounty of spuds the tamariki picked juicy corn, zucchini and snacked on two varieties of delicious cherry tomatoes as they worked. All from the plants they sowed, planted and tended last spring.

It was an exciting and satisfying way to reap the rewards of last year's mahi. Thanks to Marie for helping us.
