Mātai and Nīkau 2023
Mātai - Years 6-7. Nīkau - Years 7-8
What a great first few days back! It has been lovely seeing all of the children’s smiling faces.
Mātai and Nīkau class will be working collaboratively from years 6-8 in many different ways throughout 2022. Below are some notes on how learning will work in Mātai and Nīkau. These will be discussed further at our Meet the Teacher evening on Friday 11 February at 5.00pm. So please bring along any questions you may have.
Teachers and Learning Assistants
Amy Evans will teach Nīkau class every second Monday to cover Kimberley’s Deputy Principal release.
We are also fortunate enough to have Lexi Smith as a learning assistant in our classrooms.
Behaviour and Expectations
As we are the senior classes of the school, we hold high expectations for the behaviour of our Mātai and Nīkau students. There are our role models and we encourage them to always be displaying our school values.
We will spend a lot of time developing our organisation and communication skills this year as we prepare them for their High School years. We have many leadership opportunities that will help develop these skills including, Head Students, Student Council, Enviroschools, Librarians and Sports Shed Monitors.
Communication
Weekly communication will be sent via email using our school website. All parent/caregiver email addresses have been subscribed to the appropriate class lists but if you have not been receiving emails, please ensure you are subscribed by following this link: https://broomfield.school.nz/ and scroll down to subscribe to our updates.
The School App will be used to communicate notices that pop up; you can find instructions for installing the school app here: School App. Info about updating your class subscriptions had already been sent out earlier this week via the app.
We are contactable via email:
Nīkau Class: kimberley@broomfield.school.nz , amy@broomfield.school.nz
Mataī Class: mckenzey@broomfield.school.nz
Devices for learning
We are a BYOD (Bring your own device) school. That means, your child is allowed to bring along their own device to work on during school time. School-owned Chromebooks are available to those without BYOD. You can find more info about our BYOD and requirements for devices here: BYOD
All students are provided with a school email address with access to all Google Apps for Education tools. These accounts are monitored and regulated by the school.
To manage resources and assignments we use Google Classroom. You will have received an invite to join your child's account - this means you can see the work they have submitted and any work that is overdue.
Apps for Learning
As we are preparing our children for the digital age we will be using a range of different online learning tools and apps in Matai and Nikau.
Google Classroom will be used to share resources and post assignments for Nikau to complete. This is used with their school Gmail accounts and will allow them to access the Google Apps for Education.
We have invited you to join your child/ren’s accounts. By doing so, you will receive weekly emails of what assignments have been completed and what is still outstanding.
Banqer is an online financial literacy and rewards program. Students have been set up with accounts that allow them to earn money for showing our Broomfield School Values (Achievement, Belonging, Self-Belief and Creativity). They can also spend this money in their virtual world or put it towards rewards in the classroom.
Home Learning
Home learning each week will consist of:
Spelling - ‘The Code’
Reading - completing a reading log each week
Maths - a weekly home learning sheet
Last year our Year 7 and 8s took part in the William Pike Challenge. We will not take part this year but we are going to run our own Broomfield Challenge. You find out more information about this here.
You can read more about our classroom programmes below in our Meet the Teacher Slideshow.
