Nīkau Kaikōura Camp

Sean O'Regan, Carter Williams —

Three awesome days of kayaking, walking, mini golfing and amazing racing!

Last week, we headed off on our epic three-day camp to Kaikōura. The car ride was long—about two hours! We made a quick stop at the Cheviot Domain to stretch our legs and grab a snack. When we finally arrived, we had to wait for our cabins to be ready, so we hung out on the playground and gathered in the main hall to get our rooms. Once the cabins were sorted, we raced to unpack and, of course, hide our secret stash of lollies. After that, it was free time, and we spent the rest of the afternoon chilling at the playground and games room. Day one was pretty relaxed!

On day two, the fun really kicked off. We had to wake up early—7:00 a.m. sharp—because we had an action-packed day ahead. We split into two groups: one went kayaking, and the other did a scenic walk along the Kaikōura Peninsula. My group went kayaking first. We formed rafts by linking our kayaks together, and some of us even dared to walk across the raft! The best part? Dolphins came to swim around us! It was incredible to see them up close. After lunch, we swapped activities. The walk took about an hour, there and back, and we spotted heaps of seals. Some were huge and lazy, but the little baby seals were absolutely adorable.

Day three came way too soon. We packed up our gear in the morning but still had some fun activities left. First, we played a round of mini golf, trying our best to get hole-in-ones. Then, we gathered at the beach for our grand finale: an Amazing Race challenge. The competition was intense, but Maia, GG, Scarlett, and Yasi crushed it and won! They were rewarded with a special prize—$250,000 in Banker money! After that, it was time to head home. We took the train from Kaikōura to Rangiora, which took about 2 hours and 42 minutes. By the time we got back, our families were waiting for us, probably relieved to have some peace and quiet again after our adventure-filled camp!
