Relief Carving Oreo biscuits with Mrs R.
Tī Kōuka and Mataī had the fun experience last week of carving pictures onto the creme of an Oreo biscuit for a fun 'mini' art lesson with Mrs Roxburgh.
They were shown a slide show introducing the art technique called low relief, a French term from the Italian 'basso relievo' (low relief), or bas relief. It is a sculpture technique in which figures and/or design elements are just barely more prominent than the overall background.
Coins and cameo brooches are good examples of 'bas relief'. To help the students with their designs and sketches they also looked at 'negative space' art to find further inspiration.Armed with a toothpick and a biscuit they pulled apart the biscuit and then scraped and scratched their own sketches onto the creme. It proved to be a sticky and tasty project.Mrs R was enthusiastically asked for more biscuits by most as they were allowed to eat their art work on completion .
