Tuakana Teina with Rimu
Last term Tī Kōuka and Rimu learnt about coding alongside each other, demonstrating the concept of tuakana teina - a type of buddy system between older and younger students.
Tuakana teina is a fantastic learning tool as the roles can be reversed so that younger students can often be the teacher, guiding older students with new learning. Rimu were outstanding guiding and teaching Tī Kōuka with their new found knowledge of coding through organising and ordering numbers. We found the first attempt at ordering a little tricky but once we grasped the concept we were off and flying - thanks Rimu!
The following day Tī Kōuka were the teachers, supporting and guiding Rimu to learn about binary coding which is the language computers 'talk' in. Tī Kōuka were fantastic role models and really enjoyed helping Rimu create their names in "secret code" and experience success.
Tī Kōuka built on their knowledge of coding when Melissa came to visit from Canterbury University and they learnt to create their own unique messages using binary code and counters
Many thanks to Ms O'Conner and her wonderful Rimu tamariki who came to collaborate with us, we can't wait to do it again.
