Kowai to Leithfield Beach Enviroleader's Trip

Aisling O'Connor —

Last term our wonderful Enviroleaders enjoyed a day out on the Kowai track and helped the environment by doing native planting at Leithfield Beach Lagoon.

The sun came out and the fresh winter air was invigorating as our Enviroleaders began the trek down the Kowai track. We stopped to notice native plants (including a basket fungus) and introduced/ pest plants which are typical of our river beds. Piwakawaka/ fantails and bellbirds flitted through the trees.

Rima Herber from the Hurunui District Council chatted to us about various native vs. pest plants which can be seen on the track.

We reached the Kowai lagoon and were joined by Kevin Roche from the Leithbeach Beach Regeneration Project. His mahi on the replanting project along the track is an inspiration. He spoke with us about the efforts so far, the various community planting bees, and the challenges from rabbits, wind and drought. After identifying suitable trees already planted on this coastal site, we planted some trees ourselves.

Our leaders enjoyed getting their hands dirty, working together to dig, plant, lay weed mat and assemble tree guards.

Lunch was had on the beach looking out over a calm and crystal clear sea. Bird spotting and wandering along the shore collecting treasures were highlights. Collected stones are to be used in an upcycling project back at school.

Thanks to Merryn Tamati, Michelle du Plooy, Nic Roberts and Glenda Fidler for providing help and transport.
