Kids Go Gardening

Aisling O'Connor —

Spring has sprung in our school garden! The Enviroleaders and Rimu have started planting the school vegetable garden.

Last week Rimu tamariki planted their seed potatoes. We chitted them in class and then carefully dug holes to plant them in our garden bed. To increase our growing space, we decided to reuse some old tyres to make 'potato stacks'. As the potatos grow we will mound them up using compost.

The tamariki learned about what plants need in order to live and we talked about healthy soil. You will have noticed a pile of lovely compost in the orchard. This was donated by Yr 8 student Emma Robertson, who raised the money to purchase the compost mix by selling her home-grown pumpkins last autumn. A huge thank you is extended to Emma for showing initiative and being an enterprising gardener, as well as choosing to donate the profits back to our school garden. Her actions are a fantastic example of our 'Broomfield Way'.

This Friday Rimu will plant out zucchini, pumpkin, lettuce and sow seeds of beetroot and beans. Thank you Marie Reveley and Micheele Du Plooy for their kind doantions of seedlings. Your support really helps.
