Broomfield School ABCS Challenge

Kimberley Hobson —

A challenge to develop strengths, passions, and relationships for our Broomfield School senior tamariki! Year 7 and 8 Students

The ABC’S of the Broomfield School Challenge

The Broomfield School Challenge is designed to develop strengths, passions, and relationships for our Broomfield School senior tamariki! It will consist of a mix of at-school and at-home challenges following that term's values focus.

The Challenge

Outdoor activities: We will take part in at least 4 outdoor activities throughout the year. These are to provide opportunities for our tamariki to step outside of their comfort zone, take risks and build confidence.

Community Service: Community Service allows young people to explore, develop and strengthen empathy, humility and compassion. We will plan and organise community events each term that will provide our tamariki with opportunities to develop communication skills, and connectedness with the local community, peers and whānau and embrace a greater sense of purpose. Students may also plan and organise their own community service.

Home Learning: These are designed to engage children with other family members in their learning experiences at home and will focus on one of our school values each term.

  • It is quality not quantity that counts, so take your time to complete each challenge to a high standard.

  • It is up to the children to meet with the teacher and show that they have completed a challenge (self check, parent check and some evidence), children at Broomfield are required to share their home learning challenges with the class in a short presentation to get it signed off. Everyday time is set-aside for Home Learning Presentations.

  • Home Learning activities are designed to be completed at home and are written in conjunction with children and the experiences that parents choose their children to participate in.

Children’s Design

At any stage a child can share anything they have been up to at home, on holiday and out and about in the community. The list of challenge activities is not just confined to this list, children can add to it at any stage.

How to get them signed off:

  1. Make a presentation to the class and/or school to show how you completed a challenge

  2. A learning story that explains what happened and what learning took place needs to be given to the classroom teacher after the event. Make sure you include an outline of what you did, what you learnt and next steps in future learning – this can be presented anyway that a child chooses

Challenge awards:

Each term, badges will be awarded to those children who complete the challenge focus for the term.

At the end of the year, if a child has completed all four challenges then they will earn themselves a super challenge award and badge.
