Do you love being beside the sea? Have you been to the estuary at Waikuku Beach? Maybe it’s time to have some fun and visit?

If you are a primary school pupil in North Canterbury you can tell us what you thought about the estuary and win one of three terrific prizes.

We are a group of volunteers who work on the Ashley Rakahuri River which flows out to sea at the estuary.

We want to protect the area and the birds that feed, nest, roost and ret there.

We invite you to write a poem or essay with your thoughts.

To learn more about it we have information on our website www.arrg.org.nz.

You can write as many words as you like. A short essay or poem, or a longer one. The maximum word limit is 800 but no one has to write this many.

The deadline is 11th April, 2025.

The competition is being run by the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group. Entries should be emailed to secretaryarrg@gmail.com.

Some background information about the estuary is available on the www.arrg.org.nz website. Also the terms and conditions for entries.

GREAT PRIZES:

1st prize A weekend for a family of four at the Waikuku Beach Holiday Park and a guided tour of the estuary by an ARRG member.

2nd prize A family pass to Willowbank Reserve.
3rd prize A family pass to Rangiora Town Hall Cinemas.

Note to teachers, parents, others: The main purpose of the Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare competition is to get young people to write about what they love about the estuary, what it means to them, why it is such an important environmental place in our community and what they would like to see done to protect it.
