Hockey - Girls 2nd XI

Monica Richards —

A large group of girls trialling for the Girls Hockey teams at Burnside High this year ensured that we had a stronger 2nd XI team than last year.

After being placed rather ambitiously in Division 1, we suffered some heavy losses but learnt a lot about the pace at which Hockey can be played. It was a big step up for the year 9 players who improved rapidly, playing much older girls. After the grading games we settled into Division 2 which was a grade higher than we played in 2016. We ended up middle of the table with several comfortable wins and a few hard-fought losses.

Sarah Burton was an excellent captain of the team and ably blended the mixed-aged team into a cohesive unit. The few senior members of the team were always welcoming and encouraging of the many year 9 and 10 players.

Our fantastic coaches, Katherine and Tessa Lobb, found the girls always willing to learn and improve. Their structured yet fun training sessions enhanced the excellent work ethic of the team. Katherine coached the team last year and showed increased experience in her skill as a coach. She and Tessa always had high expectations of the team and the players responded accordingly.

There were some stunning goals, particularly from Emma Burton, and equally sensational goalkeeping at the other end of the pitch from our energetic goalie Grace Thomson. Overall however, the highlight of the season for me and the coaches was the pleasure in working with such a positive and enthusiastic bunch of girls.

Roll on the 2018 Hockey Season!
