Manawatia a Matariki me Puaka
Rangatahi Māori leaders organised a variety of activities at Te Kura o Waimairi-iri to celebrate Matariki rising.
The leaders met, brainstormed, and collaborated to ensure that as a kura we could recognise and celebrate the significance of Matariki, even though the public holiday is not during Term Time.
There was a Quiz in form class for Mitchell Cup (divisional) points and kahoots to do as we are all still learning about this time and the Mātauranga it represents. Thanks so much to Mr Risbridger for sorting this!
Miss Heta and the wonderful team in te whare pukapuka (the Library) put together and interactive display where kaiako and ākonga could write wishes and memories on ngā whetū(stars) and ngā manawa (hearts). These represent the stars in the constellation of Hiwa-i-te-rangi who is about goals, wishes and aspirations, and Pōhutukawa who is the star that is connected those that have passed on. Thanks to Kahu and August for writing the words about the stars.
A busy and fulfilling lunch time challenging our brains with some raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax) and paper was another activity. K1 was full of rangatahi having a go and helping each other, watching videos on the projector, there was some waiata, and then at the end LOTS of cake! Thanks Kōka and Miss Heta for facilitating!
Rangatahi Māori leaders like Gabby and Dustin did a great job of speaking over the school tannoy system to share a whakatauki o te rā. It was great to stop during the day and learn about what they meant. Mr Findlay organised some kai karakia cards too, as we recognise the tīkanga of being thankful of where our kai comes from... and kai sharing is a huge part of Matariki!
Friday - the last day of term - is scheduled for a celebration in the Quad with waiata anthems on the loud speaker and chalk drawings of the stars and what Matariki represents.
Leaders did an incredible job of sorting all these events, especially with rostering home, and your kaiako are all really proud of your organisation of this!
