Canoe Polo - South Island Secondary Schools' Championships

Carl Johnston —

Held in Oamaru, 12th-13th August

Two Burnside High School teams travelled to Oamaru to take part in the South Island Secondary Schools' Canoe Polo Championships. Both teams have been training outside at Lake Roto Kohatu over the winter in preparation for the tournament.

The Senior Open team consisted of Matt Patient, Sam Brunton, Callum Bray, Henry Smythe, Felix Backhouse, Angus Seal, Georgia Van de Loo and Julia Sharp. They played well throughout the tournament and made impressive progress in their individual skill and as a team. As many of these players would still be in the Junior category, it is anticipated this team will become highly competitive next year.

The Senior Girls team included Georgia Van de Loo, Julia Sharp, Melissa Coker, Michelle Tapp, Angela Chhour, Ruby Glasson and Vanessa Blackie. The girls narrowly lost to James Hargest College in the playoff for 3rd place, so ended the tournament with a credible 4th place.

All students consistently demonstrated good sportsmanship and represented Burnside High School well.

Thank you to Miss Symons, Miss Robison and Mr Smythe for accompanying our team, and to our parent helpers, Kerry and Joanne, for their ongoing support.
