Mei Takahashi reports on her time in the IRP
Half-programme experience
During my 12 weeks in the International Rugby Programme (IRP) I learned many things and grew as a person in all sorts of ways. So many of the things that I managed to experience in Christchurch would only be possible within the IRP. For example, because the IRP has players from countries all over the world, by mixing with them I developed an interest in their culture and language. Beyond English I even learned a little Spanish and German.
In the rugby skills sessions and weight-training classes the various coaches not only provided me with stimulating, high-level instruction but also detailed and useful feedback.
In terms of playing rugby, despite my still being a high-school student, I was able to join the Christchurch FC Women’s team and practise and play with adult female players, something that has given me great confidence moving forward with my rugby.
I was incredibly blessed with my homestay family, had all sorts of experiences that a normal study-abroad package could never provide and made lots of friends in the process. I am very happy that I took part in the International Rugby Programme.
