Magna Voce

Alia Govin Fowler —

Magna Voce is an non-auditioned senior SATB choir for any students that want to represent the school and sing songs they know and love.

From show tunes to pop songs to waiatas, there’s something for everyone in this group. Thanks to the encouraging direction of Miss Charlotte Ensor along with assistance from Zara and Rachel Doig, we used our Friday and Wednesday lunchtime rehearsals to develop our items to a high standard. In being a section leader in this group, I got to see first-hand the work we all put into these pieces.

After disruptions in previous years, it was a pleasure to perform regularly again. This year we have performed at The Big Sing, two Burnside choral showcases and the Year 11 and 12 Prizegiving. Dylan Jonkers received the student conductor award at The Big Sing for leading both songs last-minute after Miss Ensor was exposed to COVID and unable to conduct. We navigated challenges throughout the year such as these professionally and consistently put on performances that we were all proud of. Miss Ensor always encouraged us to have fun in our performances, which I believe made us stronger both as a musical group and as friends within the music department. I’ll carry my memories of this group with me beyond my time at Burnside and I hope to find similar communal enjoyment in my other pursuits.
