NZ Secondary Schools Gymnastics Championships

Artistic

Congratulations to Adam Lim 9SOSC who represented Burnside High School at this event in Auckland. He placed 1st overall in the MAG Level 4 grade at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Artistic Championship.

The Artistic Championship compromises of 6 disciplines - Floor, Pommel, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar.

Adam's combined score in these events was excellent, he finished the competition over 2 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Trampolining

Congratulations to Nicola McLachlan 9NMRC and Lexi Ross 13JRD who competed at the New Zealand Secondary School Trampoline and DMT Championships. The DMT is the Double Mini Trampoline, in which the gymnasts combine the horizontal run of tumbling with the vertical rebound of trampolining. After a short run, the athlete jumps onto a small, two-level trampoline to perform a rebounding skill, immediately followed by a dismount element onto a landing mat. Both girls competed extremely well in all the disciplines and placed in more than one event.

Nicola placed 2nd in the 13-14 Women Individual Trampoline, 3rd in the 13-14 Women Synchro and 5th in the 13-14 Women DMT.

Lexi placed 2nd in the 17+ Women DMT, 2nd in the 17+ Women Synchro and 3rd in the 17+ Women Individual Trampoline.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held in Auckland, 29 & 30 May. Congratulations to Elle Ilkiw 11WMRI and Paris Chin 12WWIC who competed at this event. Elle placed 4th in the Level 9 competition and Paris placed 2nd in the Senior International Girls division, which is the highest level of competition at a secondary school level.

National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

A number of our Burnside High School Gymnasts competed in the Canterbury squad at the National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Auckland at the end of July. Some of the notable placings for our students that we have been aware of are Elle Ilkiw 11WMRI who was awarded a Silver in both the Hoop and Ribbon disciplines and she placed 3rd overall in the Level 9 competition; Mikayla Chin 10WLJJ placed 2nd overall in the Junior International competition and Paris Chin 12WWIC placed 2nd overall in the Senior International competition.

Both Mikayla and Paris Chin were selected in the 2021 NZ Rhythmic Gymnastics Pacific Rim Team but unfortunately due to the Covid situation were unable to compete. Paris has also been named in the 2022 Rhythmic Gymnastics National Squad.
