Burnside High School students participate in the New Zealand Model Parliament Event.

Sandra Pooch —

Six students from Year 9 to 13 spent three days engaging in this event which followed the procedures of the New Zealand Parliament.

Honourable Members of Parliament.

The New Zealand Model Parliament 2022 occurred over the weekend of 2-4 September. It was a fascinating and deeply enjoyable event, which I attended alongside a host of Burnside delegates, as well as about one hundred and forty students from all across the country. We were incredibly lucky to have this event occurring in Christchurch, the only national UN Youth event to my knowledge held in person outside of Wellington and Auckland.

NZMP is a debate and political awareness event, in which attendees are divided into mock political parties in a balance equaling that of the current Parliament. As mock MPs, attendees work to craft and refine a mock Bill for passage in the mock House. Despite the obvious fictions involved, it became a very engaging event, with many attendees becoming highly invested in their select committees. Myself, I passed several amendments, failed several more, spoke and voted often, and generally had a great time.

The event was extensive and it would be pointless, as well as rather boring to those who read this article, to try to list a play-by-play of each event. Instead, I will content myself in saying that it was tremendous fun, and definitely ought to be recommended to Burnside's aspiring orators and politicians.

I yield to the Speaker.
