Term 2 Sports Update

Sports Office —

Whether it is in Gymsports, Powerlifting, Squash, Volleyball, Football, Badminton, Tennis or Swimming, our athletes are representing our school, their province, country and clubs with pride.

Gymsports 

New Zealand Secondary Schools Gymnastic Championships (May & June)

Our gymnasts had some fantastic results at the NZSS Gymnastics Championships held in various location in New Zealand throughout May and June.

Paris Chin 13PZS - NZSS Champion Rhythmic Gymnastics Senior International Womens

Nicola McLachlan 10NSMT - 3rd 15-16 Womens Tumbling Championships

Elle Ilkiw 12WMRI - 5th Womens Level 10 Rhythmic Gymnastics

Paris was also selected in the New Zealand Rhythmic Gymnastics team and will be competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England later this month.  We all wish her the very best and look forward to watching her compete. 


Powerlifting 

Canterbury Powerlifting Championships 

Great results from the nine Burnside High School students who competed at the Canterbury Powerlifting Championships in the April school holidays. It was a very small competition which allowed all students to come away with a place medal. Callum Maule 13SFK, Penny Yang 12NSYA, Tom Hoang 13GMT and Alfie Trafford 13OLK all placed first in their weight classes.

Alfie Trafford 13OLK and Jack Mudu 13OLK both broke New Zealand records at this comp. Jack broke the deadlift record of 178kgs and Alfie broke his own deadlift and squat records, and now holds all the records in his weight/age class after finally hitting the bench press record of 100kg!


World Powerlifting NZ South Island Championships Saturday 11 June

Nine students competed with excellent lifting from new novice lifters Alex Dubery 12SCTH and Isabella Bray-Lim 9WWIC.

Results:

  • Steven Ye 13PZS – unofficial national deadlift record of 150kg in the Under 62kg class

  • Penny Yang 12NSYA – Best Junior Female Lifter


Squash 

SISS Team Championships, Saturday 25 June, Nelson

Our Boys team, comprising of: James O'Keefe 12WRIC, Addison Po 12WWLD and Ryan Gillman 12NLOD, came 3rd.

First place went to Marlborough Boys and 2nd place went to Otago Boys.

These three boys, plus two others, will now compete at the NZ Secondary Schools' Squash Teams Championship event in Auckland at the end of July. This is the first time Burnside High have a team at this event, so good luck boys!


Badminton 

South Island Secondary Schools Badminton

The SISS Team Badminton Championships took place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June in Christchurch. Burnside High School was represented by two Boys teams and one Girls team.

In the Boys competition the Burnside Boys 1 team came away with first place, beating James Hargest College from Invercargill in the final. The team was:

  • Tony Chen 13GVK
  • Mahith Balapuwaduge 13ABJ
  • Baxter Lin 11SBUC
  • Justin Loh 11SKNG. 

The team played very well and only lost three matches all weekend. The Burnside Boys 2 team, made up of Year 9 and 11 students, finished in sixth place.

The Burnside High School Girls team finished in third place behind Christchurch Girls High School and James Hargest. The team was:

Volleyball 

NZ Inter-Provincial Volleyball Championships Saturday 4 to Monday 6 June, Wellington

The following Burnside High School students contributed to the success of both the Canterbury U17 and U19 teams:

  • U17 Girls’
    Natalie Livingstone 11WWAJ and Eliana Collins 11SDAE

  • U19 Boys’ (National Champs)
    Mark Chang 13SRT and Jova Waqa 12NLNC

  • U19 Girls’ (Runners Up)
    Catherine Porter 13ABJ – Tournament Team

The Canterbury men’s and women’s teams also featured many former BHS students showing the influence we are having on the overall sport of volleyball in NZ.

Beach Volleyball - U19 Asian Champs,Thailand

Rosa Vesty 13HLK and Taylah Holdem 13SFK represented NZ at this event in an effort to qualify for the World Champs.  The qualifying teams will be announced later this month (July).

Volleyball - NZ Junior Womens' Team

Catherine Porter, Rosa Vesty and Taylah Holdem have been selected for this team, to play a test series against Australia (in NZ) later on in the year.


Football 

Charlotte Mortlock 12SMPP has been selected to attend the Football NZ Women’s U-17 training camp, to be held in Auckland from 18 – 24 July.


Swimming

Tennis 

Alkmini Giannakogiorgou 13SFK competed at two ITF (International Tennis Federation) Tournaments in Darwin, Australia in both Doubles and Singles matches.
