Girls Super Touch

Izzy Grant —

In Term one, we started the year with a small group of keen girls.

The core of the team consisted of four of us representing Canterbury in the Under 16s at the time. We managed to scrounge enough players to field a team, often having only eight players in a game. There were lots of bumps in the road along the way with things like Covid which caused both our Canterbury Champs and South Island championship to be cancelled and lack of numbers but we managed to get through the Covid interrupted Super Touch season unbeaten.

In Term 4, we had the same group of keen girls trying to put a team together. Eager to have more subs we were on the search to find some new upcoming touch players. We pulled in six newbies, three being year 9s and five of which had played no or very little touch. With the enthusiasm, positivity and dedication of our coach Benn Seebeck and our manager Ms Phillips, we managed to get some trainings in. With other commitments the girls had we struggled to have many but we made the most out of the ones we did have. The Term 4 season was a five week Senior Girls Super Touch competition, where we managed to go unbeaten once again and take out the Super Touch Senior Girls title.

We have decided not to go to the NZ Secondary School Nationals this year as we would like to build our team to be stronger for a hopeful appearance in the next two years.

The following girls made it into the Canterbury teams:

  • U16 NZ Girls Squad
    Gabriela Cowell

  • Canterbury U18
    Izzy Grant
    Taylor Heath
    Manisha Seebeck

  • Open Womens' Canterbury team
    Manisha Seebeck
