23 June Match Reports
Four games played at Burnside HS
Burnside HS U14s 51 Christchurch BHS U14 Gold 14
The Burnside High School under 14 side can walk away proud of their efforts against a good Christchurch Boys' High School Gold team. Burnside won convincingly with a final score of 51 - 14. The Burnside team played well under pressure, and there were many great individual performances. It was unfortunate that the referee did not show up. Luckily, a young man from Christchurch Boys' High School stepped up and refereed the first half, and Burnside coach Grant Wadley finished off the game. Without their efforts the boys would not have had a game, and for that everyone is very grateful. The player of the day was a difficult choice, due to many outstanding moments. In the end it was split between a forward and a back of the day. Cole Mountford was the forward of the day. He made several great runs, and scored a good try. Jacob Hepi, playing as a back for the first time, was the back of the day. He scored a great try showing off his speed, and made many impressive tackles on the front lines.
Tries: Sefton Wesley 2, Rory Campbell 2, Jacob Hepi, Cole Mountford, Christian Williams-Schwalger, Alfie Trafford, Archie Ovens
Conversions: Rory Campbell 3
Burnside HS U15s vs Cashmere HS U15s lost 5-70
Burnside HS u16 46-12 Merivale Papanui u16
Burnside produced an immaculate display of running rugby to clinch a well-earned and convincing home victory. The two sides have built up a healthy rivalry over the last few years because of many close games and despite what the scoreline indicates, it was a hard fought physical game. The visitors' forwards were a menace when they rumbled the ball up in the close channels but the hosts' defence was near impenetrable. Merivale Papanui scored two pick and drive tries in the last ten minutes but most of the rugby was played in their half as they struggled to contain the rampaging offload game that the home team executed very well. Burnside kept the ball alive and used the width of the field to good effect, with majority of the tries being scored out wide. Sam Thompson kept up his impressive form with another hat-trick but the whole team deserves credit for following through with the strategy in the satisfying manner in which they did.
Tries: Sam Thompson 3, Hamish Trenchard 2, Riley Goad, Augustine Puig, Archie Richardson.
Conversions: Riley Goad 3.
Burnside HS 1st XV vs Merivale Papanui U18 won 58-0
The 1st XV had a default win against Timaru BHS 2nd XV so replaced that game with a "friendly" against Merivale Papanui U18s. The replacement game was a Section 1 team (us) playing against a Section 3 team, so Merivale Papanui had nothing to lose and bravely accepted the challenge. As should be the case, the higher ranking team dominated every aspect of the game, scoring ten tries and kicking four conversions. The 1st XV played with good attacking shape, scoring some well created tries involving several phases and many passes.
We are very grateful to the referee who had just reffed the U16 game and backed up with another hour on the field for us despite his calf tightening up along the way. Needless to say, this kind of volunteer spirit is a big part of what holds our national sport together.
Scrumhalf Lucas Parry won man-of-the-match and Jung Chul Lee was chosen as best tackler, but there were also outstanding performances by Harrison Mitchell, Nick Smith, Grant Jackson, Juani Bubica, Ofa Pukeiku, Tom Henderson, Kyle Gullery and Diego Mosso, who was virtually unstoppable whenever he ran with ball in hand. Wing Reuben Godinet played very well in the first half and Tera Maeda filled in ably at hooker after a blank of several months.
Tries: Lucas Parry (2), Harrison Mitchell (2), Jung Chul Lee (2), Grant Jackson (2) Diego Mosso, Nick Smith; Conversions: Lucas Parry (4).
