SGCNZ UOSW Shakespeare Festival

Kate Olliver —

This year Burnside entered a number of teams into the Shakespeare regional competition which was held in June at Villa Maria College.

With more than 40 students involved across all year levels it was a large group and for many the first time they had performed any Shakespeare.

The festival has two categories the first a 5 minute scene and the second a 15 minute scene. Our scenes were from a variety of plays including Hamlet, King John and Macbeth.

Burnside were lucky enough to receive a number of awards, including best overall actor of the festival which was awarded to Liam Dacombe for his role as York in Henry 5th part 3 and the best overall 5 minute scene from Macbeth which was directed by Fraser Devoll, and starred Selena Gilmer (Lady Macbeth) and Lewis Williams (Macbeth).

These students were also lucky enough to attend the National festival in Wellington in June this year, where they were awarded an assessor's certificate for the “ most impacting shock moment”.
