2022 National Powerlifting Championships

Ruth Knights —

Multiple records were broken by BHS students at this year's national powerlifting championships.

Alfie Trafford, Sahel Mohammadi, Alex Dubery, Tom Hoang, Callum Maule, Penny Yang, and Steven Ye traveled to Paraparaumu over the weekend, along with Mrs. Knights and her son, to compete at the WPNZ national powerlifting championships.

National records were broken by four Burnside students at this event.

Steven Ye in the under 62kg male division broke the national deadlift record with a lift of 148kg - nearly two and a half times his body weight!

Callum Maule in the under 77kg male class broke the squat record with 165kg, the deadlift record with 190kg and the total record with a huge 455kg total!

Penny Yang in the under 72kg female division also broke 3 National records with a 107kg squat, a 117kg deadlift and a 276 total.

Alfie Trafford dominated the under 105kg male division breaking all divisional records with a total of 497kg a 180kg squat, a 107kg bench press and a huge 210kg deadlift!

All students had a great time and most placed in the top three in their division and achieved personal best lifts. All are to be commended for these outstanding results and for displaying great sportsmanship and support for one another.
