2016 Secondary Schools Volleyball National Championship - Girls

Chloe Foden —

2016 so far has proven to be another successful year for the Burnside High School Girls' Volleyball team.

Competing at Mainland Champs (South Islands) back in March, the girls had begun their competitive year with a number of strong performances leading to a well-deserved win, finishing the tournament with only one lost set to Marlborough Girls' High School. Following on from Mainlands the Girls' Volleyball team continued their winning streak taking out Canterbury Champs for the 4th year in a row.

With April soon approaching the girls remained committed to the 2016 goal of winning the National Volleyball Championships held in Palmerston North. They put in a large number of hours in the gym and also the classroom, identifying “strength and honour” from the Gladiator as their motivational and mental skills motto, in which the girls lived and breathed all season.

The girls started Nationals with a number of strong performances only losing one pool game to Sacred Heart College allowing them to progress to the finals top of their pool. Burnside High School went on to win back-to-back National Girls' Volleyball titles.

The girls beat Tauranga Girls' College A in a tight four set final 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 26-24) at Arena Manawatu on Friday. That makes it two titles in a row for Burnside, who won the final last year. In the final set, Burnside was leading 17-13, but fell behind 21-19. They came back to level it at 24-all, before Burnside won 26-24 to win the set and the match.
