Football - Boys 1st XI

Dave Williams —

The Boys 1st XI overall had a rather successful season with a couple of ups and downs throughout. The boys started the year in a rebuild phase after losing eight players from last season but managed to source talent from throughout the school with stand-out players like Naweed Ahmadi being brought into the squad.

We  had a slow start to the season facing two of the top three sides in the first three games, taking just the one point from it after a high scoring match against cross town rivals, Cashmere.

The beasts soon found their rhythm only losing to St Thomas' in the remainder of the season and coming out of the regular competition as holders of the Connetics Shield. This was something for the boys to savour after an eventful season and being placed in the wrong tournament, after qualifying for top tier but being placed in the Rex Dawkins second tier tournament.

Despite the tournament set-back, the boys were determined to show why we should be in the top tier and the beasts fired up and put on a show for all eight games in the tournament scoring a total of 36 and conceding 4, giving the team a tournament win and plenty of good memories to look back on.

To our departing year 13 members - Musse, he put in the hard yards off the field all so he could do his best on it, all while encouraging the boys to keep going and score “one more time.” For Yuuta coming in just for the year and scoring a magnificent goal during the regular season, he was one to get involved in team activities and really dig deep when times were tough.  For Isaac, what a key player he was, always putting his body on the line and taking one for the team, making sure the sheet was kept clean and that the boys had their showers after the game.

To our coaches Bully and Dave providing the boys with good nutrition on tournament and plenty of halftime antics throughout the season, we couldn’t have done it without them and their warm ups.
