Year 11Geography trip to Port hills and Corsair Bay

Cheneen Whelpton —

We as Geography students went on a school trip around the Lyttelton province, this was an amazing experience as we were able to learn more about the geographical skills and techniques and also learn about how the port hills were created and changed. Not only after the 2011 earthquakes but after the volcanic eruption creating the banks peninsula.

We first started by hopping onto the bus as a class and driving to Lyttelton bay, we were able to walk around and look at all the history of the old buildings and how Lyttelton has changed over time since the first early settlers we also looked at how Lyttelton changed after the 2011 earthquakes and the damage it caused as well as all the new building that were being built.

After this we went to the Christchurch Gondola which was an amazing experience, from the top we were able to see the whole of Christchurch city as it was an amazing day. We had the opportunity to go through the time tunnel which is a historic ride that tells you all about how the Banks Peninsula was made as well as how the early settlers came across the ocean to get to New Zealand, we also did some mapping skills at the top of the mountain with being able to view in any direction helping us with our mapping skills.

After heading back down the Gondola we headed towards Corsair Bay, which was a very small beach enclosed by hills with shimmering blue water. We had our lunch here and proceeded to gather in groups and built an island with sand according to a geographic scale. After 35mins of intense sandcastle building, the teacher judged the sandcastles and gave the students prizes.

Over all this was a very educational and fun trip which we all enjoyed and would highly recommend to future Geo students who get the chance to go on this wonderful trip.
