BHS Boys A - Division 2 Champions at National Volleyball Tournament

Claire Barker —

Burnside Senior A Boys claimed a GOLD MEDAL in Division 2 at the recent New Zealand Secondary Schools' Volleyball Championships, during Summer Tournament Week.

One of the biggest sporting events in New Zealand was held during Term One in Palmerston North, being the 54th New Zealand Secondary Schools' Volleyball Championships at CET Arena and Massey University.

With volleyball on a rapid rise in schools across the motu, the 2024 event has jumped 20% in participating teams, up to 198 in total, with 103 girls’ teams joined by 95 boys’ teams over five days of competition.

Burnside took a team of 10 boys along with Toby Gardener (Coach) and Claire Barker (Manager). They finished the tournament with a Gold Medal in Division 2, beating Cashmere High School in a gripping final. This is an outstanding achievement for the boys and a reflection of the dedication, from not only the team, but past coach Ben Laing, and current coach Toby Gardner.

We also say farewell to the Year 13's - Thomas Vesty, Azariah Malietoa, James Barker-McMillan and Oliver Barker-McMillan as they finish their last tournament with the team.

Some boys will be heading into club volleyball over the winter and we will all re-group in Term 4 for another season.

Lastly, a big thanks to all parents, teachers and supporters of Boys Volleyball at Burnside High School.
