Jac Doogan —

Year 12 at UC Discovery Day, 9 April, an on-campus university experience for all Year 12 students.

In a first for Burnside High School, all Year 12 students attended the UC Year 12 Discovery Day in April. Students attended a general information session, followed by three lectures of their own choice.

Course Planning Sessions for Yr13

Each of the New Zealand universities, plus Ara, will run course planning sessions for 2020, where Year 13 students can have all their queries answered and ensure they are enrolling for the correct papers. There will also be information on scholarships and accommodation. All these events are advertised through Schoology.

ARA presentations to Maori students

Humarie Chick, from Ara, was at school on 4 July, between 1.00 and 2.30 pm. All Māori students were invited to attend this information session, outlining the courses and support available at our polytechnic.

Ekea! Pathways for Maori

Year 12 Māori students are invited to attend Ekea! Pathways for Māori at the University of Canterbury on 2 August. This event provides information on courses and degrees taught at UC and what is needed before starting University (entry requirements, scholarships and course planning). The Māori Student Development Team and Tuākana Mentors share their own student experiences and talk about life on campus while sharing kai with the visiting taiohi Māori. There will be keynote speakers, a student panel, Q & A session, and interactive sessions in Arts, Business and Law, Education, Health and Human Development, Engineering and Science; and involves students spending half a day at the University. To date 9 students have registered for Ekea!

Year 11 and 12 Career Development

Jacqui Doogan, HOD Careers, and Kathy Jones, Careers Consultant have completed 437 individual Year 12 career development interviews. The aim is to interview all 493 students by the end of Term 2 or early in Term 3. The Year 11 careers programme is about to start, with Mrs Doogan visiting each of the mathematics classes for one period. During this time she will explain NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3; show students how to keep track of their successes to date, help them set academic goals for the year, complete a career activity that provides insight into possible future career pathways, and talk about subject selection for next year.

Gateway Update

This year 60 senior students have had an opportunity to participate in the Gateway programme. This is an extracurricular programme for students to explore future pathways, by working on industry-specific NCEA standards as well as completing work exploration placements.

During Terms 1 and 2, students have enjoyed a range of opportunities, including:

  • An Aviation programme endorsed by Air New Zealand

  • A Radio Broadcasting and Journalism programme provided by Media Works

  • A Construction Scaffolding Course

  • An Automotive course with a work placement at Continental Cars Ferrari specialists.

Feedback on Gateway from Jeriel Tee, 12SDMJ, who is interested in Aviation:

I would totally recommend this programme, as I got an insight into the different areas of aviation. It also gave me more understanding of equipment and ideas that will help me as a pilot.

STP (Secondary Tertiary Programmes)

Currently we have 21 students participating in STP, with 17 students at Ara and 3 students at National Trade Academy. Students spend Thursday and Friday at the tertiary institution and the other days at BHS. The courses STP students take are aligned with their vocational pathway; and is a great opportunity for students to experience tertiary life while gaining NCEA credits in an alternative way.

In addition:

  • 7 STP students have gained their learner’s licence

  • 2 STP students have completed a scaffolding course

  • 6 STP students are completing a first aid course

STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource)

STAR-funded courses are for Year 11-13 students, and are designed to provide relevant, coherent learning experiences aligned to a student’s vocational pathway. Individual courses are offered at a range of tertiary providers, and many have NCEA credits, or credits towards a degree attached to them.

This year STAR funding has helped:

  • 25 students gain a Learner’s Licence

  • 4 students gain a Forklift Operator’s Certificate

  • 18 students are studying courses at the University of Canterbury

  • 12 students attended a 2-day flight attending workshop

  • 8 students attended a College of Creative Arts Experience Day at Massey University in Wellington

  • 10 students participated in Yoobee holiday programmes in digital illustration, photography, photoshop, or 3D Animation

  • 20 students completed a Level 2 barista course

  • The Year 11 Tourism class completed a 1-day Tourism Customer Service course
