Burnside students are planting forests the future.

Jon Land —

Term 3 has been a busy time for our Environmental Leaders

With Covid 19 restrictions in place the Environment Group have continued to meet but have worked in smaller groups on a multitude of projects. Our work has been completed for the year in Jellie Park and we have now planted close to six hundred native plants along the banks of the Hewlings Stream. This initiative sponsored by the City Council has extended our native corridor and we look forward to continuing this work next year. In our own little forest we have focused on developing our forest understory and have been planting a range of native shrubs and bushes that thrive in lower light. We have also had fun doing a bug hunt and count. As the forest develops the invertebrate life is thriving and this will, we hope, lead to ever increasing bird numbers. The group are also developing our own native plant nursery and we have potted up many of the native seedlings that grow all around our beautiful campus. These we hope to use for plantings around the grounds and also to provide funds through plant sales in the future. A very big thanks to the many students and staff who come out every week to help with our work around the grounds.
