Year 11 Physical Education Water safety and Surf Education

Helen Townsend —

The swell was up and stoke was high. The groms (kids) were paddling into bombs and throwing shakas at the beach.

During Term One, all Year 11 Physical Education students are offered water safety and surf education experiences. This year we had a half day water safety experience at Waimari Surf Club and New Brighton Surf Club.  Students had great fun learning about rips, tides, waves, water safety, beach games/sports, rescues etc from Surf Lifesaving NZ.

The successful completion of this led to the opportunity of a surfing lesson at Scarborough Beach Sumner, provided by Profession Surf Coaching Ltd. This field trip offered an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable surfing skills and cement their understanding and application of water safety.

By the end of the day everybody was popping up and riding the green face. Yewwwwwwwwwww!!! (Surfing shout for excitement or appreciation of a wave).
