Netball

Theresa Smith —

This year we had 150 students playing across 15 teams entered into the Christchurch Netball Saturday competition during Terms 2 and 3.

This was two extra teams than 2016. We had nine senior students coaching junior teams, 7 club umpires and one student involved as a venue controller and administrator.

Thank you to student coaches:

Y10C - Samantha Mountford and Rhiannah Allen

Y10D - Katie Hammond and Devin Johnston

Y9C - Ketana Armstrong

Y9D - Olivia Burnett and Izzy Hurley

Y9E - Marinah Rondel and Britney Chan

Umpires - Ketana Armstrong, Caitlin Barraball, Hannah Williamson, Te Puawai Perenara-O'Connell, Hayley Grimes, Mahboobah Rahimi and Olivia Burnett

Burnside High Netball had a great season with a number of achievements:

Ketana Armstrong achieved Level 2 Umpire Badge

Hannah Williamson achieved Zone Theory Umpire Badge

Mrs R. Keir achieved NZ Theory Umpire

Riley Thompson was nominated for U14 trials

The Senior A team convincingly won their plate final at the South Island Secondary Schools' Tournament held in Christchurch this year.

Three teams made finals for the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Competition. The Y11A team won their grand final by 8, Y10A won their grand final by 11 and Y10B lost their final by only one point.

In the Christchurch Netball competition, four teams played in semi-finals with both the Senior A and Y9A progressing on to finals with the Senior A losing by one point and the Y9A winning convincingly.

At the Burnside Netball Programme Prizegiving we awarded the following:

Team Spirit Award: Team F for showing dedication and resilience during a tough season.

Team of the Year Award: Y9A for winning their division final in the Christchurch Netball Competition.

The Junior Most Promising Player award went to a very tactical superstar in Mili Narawa.

Contribution to Senior A Netball went to Ashleigh Tomlinson for four years’ service in the Senior A team.

Coach of the Year was awarded to Mrs A Muir, coach of the Y10A team.

Our supreme award winners were:

Greatest Contribution to Netball - Ketana Armstrong

Ketana dedicated at least 12 hours a week to netball. She was the sole Wednesday venue controller at our school courts, a coach, a player, an umpire and an all-round supporter of the Netball programme. She was never sick and never dropped the ball.

Excellence in Netball - Esther Narawa

Esther is a very talented and strategic player. An enforcer from the back, Esther uses her ability to palm the ball and elevate herself above her opponents to ensure she regains possession of the ball. Amazing selection - she knew when to go for one of her signature flying intercepts and when to stay and guard her circle. She challenged her opponents and thrilled and inspired her teammates.

SENIOR A NETBALL

This year the Senior A team qualified to play in the Senior Reserve closed grade in the Christchurch Netball Competition next year which means they will be playing hour games and will be more competitive leading into SISS tournament next year. Well done to the 2017 Senior A Netball team for getting the team back into this very competitive grade. The 2017 team members: Ashleigh Tomlinson (4 years), Millie Bainbridge, Shelley Loto, Emily Narawa and Esther Narawa (2 years) and new comers; Caitlin Barraball, Vilisi Cakaunitavuki, Tehinnah Ratulomai, Eva Rewiri, Olivia Smith and Samantha Tarres.

Although we didn't achieve the result we wanted at South Islands, we did learn what motivates us and how to push ourselves to achieve more than what we thought we could! We also learnt some new dance moves and hairstyles....overall a great experience for all.

We were lucky this year to have a number of staff involved in the netball programme ensuring players had a successful and fun netball season. Thank you to Mrs R Keir, Miss A Muir, Mrs A Prosser, Mrs S Lerm, Mrs A Hennig and Mrs T Taylor.
