Lawn Bowls

Nicola Hawke —

Lawn Bowls at Burnside High took on 2017 in a fantastic way! There was a significant increase in the number of participants and the calibre of the players was sensational.

Throughout the Wednesday sport competitions, each game was painstakingly fought and recorded to enable an overall champion to be decided.  Four out of the Top 5 places were achieved by Burnside students from a collective pool of around 40 regular participants.

Billy Allan took out the honour of 1st place with a 1 point lead, followed closely in 3= by Bonnie Taylor and Chenielle Clark, and Blaithan Altenburg in 5th.

A special mention needs to made regarding team spirit — the support and collaboration by the Year 13 students was mind-blowing. Their dedication to their team outfits took everyone by surprise, especially on the days where the sun was glaring down and the ground was shimmering from heat.

Those suit jackets (The Suits) and pink dressing gowns and frilly hats (The Pink Flamingos) did not stop anyone from playing their absolute best and achieving some great gains in technique.

The success of the Wednesday competitions was followed up with more great results at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' tournament. 1st place in the Pairs division was earned by Bonnie Taylor and Chenielle Clark. The runners up, decided through aggregate scores, was awarded to Sam Wallace and Adam Hodgson, just pipping Billy Allan and Fraser Deavoll at the post.

Further representation by Bonnie and Chenielle was at the South Island Secondary Schools' tournament where they again placed 1st in the Division 2 Pairs competition.

A very successful year all-round.
