This year's Sports Awards were held on Thursday 19 October at the Aurora Centre, with guest speaker/presenter Kendra Cocksedge (World Cup Gold medal-winning Black Fern halfback) in attendance.

Sportswoman of the Year:

Tsubasa Nisbet (Basketball and Volleyball)

This is Tsubasa’s 2nd year to be nominated as Sportswoman of the Year. Tsubasa was part of the winning Volleyball National Title team in 2015 and 2016, and a team member again this year placing 3rd at the National Championships.  As well as playing, she coached a Junior Girls volleyball team this year.

Tsubasa has been the Girls Basketball Most Valuable Player for the last four years. She is the senior captain and the coach of two teams. She was a member of the Canterbury Wildcats, Canterbury Under 19s and the NZ U18 Women’s team who came 2nd at the FIBA Oceania Championships.

Sportsman of the Year:

Alexander Zhou (Table Tennis)

Alexander is the captain of the Boys Table Tennis team, who won the Canterbury and NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships this year. Alexander won the South Island U21 Boys Championships, and is a member of the NZ U18 Boys Table Tennis team. He is also a member of the Canterbury Men’s team.

Team of the Year:

Table Tennis - Boys

In the first year attending the National  Secondary Schools' Tournament, the team won the National title of the Boys A Grade. The team also won the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ title.

Table Tennis - Girls

The is also the first year that our Girls Table Tennis team have attended National Tournament, and they won the National title of the Girls Grade. The team was 2nd at the Canterbury Championships only losing to our Boys A team. Two team members also won the National Secondary Schools’ Individual titles, Avon Liu, who won the U19 Girls and Jiayi Zhou, who won the U15 Girls.

Contribution to Sport:

Ketana Armstrong

In Term 1, Ketana coordinated and organised Junior Indoor Netball. During Terms 2 and 3, Ketana was involved in Netball as a senior player, an umpire, achieving her level 2 badge,and was a coach. Ketana was also the sole venue controller for the Wednesday Canterbury schools' netball competition held at Burnside High.

Principal's Cup for Outstanding Achievement:

Amelia Garvey (Golf)

Amelia is a member of the Burnside High Mixed Golf Team, who won the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Stroke Play Championships in March, and came 2nd at the NZ Golf Finals Day in the Hawkes Bay in September.

She is a member of the Canterbury Women’s Golf team, playing at No. 1. In March, she won this year's NZ Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championships recording a winning score of 15 under par and winning by 6 shots. She also won the South Island Women’s Stroke Play Championships.

Amelia was awarded the title of New Zealand Eagles Golfing Society Golfer of the Year, previous winners include, among many others, Sir Bob Charles and Lydia Ko. Amelia qualified for the LGPA New Zealand Women's Open in November at Windross Farm in Auckland and made the cut to play the full 4 rounds.  

Amelia, in October, won a major Zonta Canterbury Secondary Schools Sports Award for Outstanding Young Sportswoman specialising in one sport. She has also secured a scholarship to the University of Southern California where she will join the golf programme in July 2018, after having the choice of approximately 15 universities all keen to have her.
