Christchurch Secondary Schools Swimming 2022

William Boyd —

Jellie Park Swimming Pool, Wednesday May 4th.

The format for this year featured all the traditional age grades and events. However juniors were only able to compete in one individual race. Separating the senior and junior swimmers allowed the event to run in two separate bubbles. This was within the covid gathering framework of less than 200 people at the time. However all the events were offered except for springboard diving which was a sport lost after the Canterbury Earthquakes and destruction of QE2 in 2011.

The year by year comparison of the swim teams results supports the fact that there has never been a better result than what the team achieved this year. 31 places in this years swim meet highlights excellent performances and reflects on Burnside as a dominant school in this sport .

We had 4 performances that broke meeting records. Hamish Giddens performance is not acknowledged because he broke the same record as Harry Renner who won the race. Harry will be acknowledged as a standout swimmer of this meeting and Stacey Morgan was unlucky with her 2 records not to be the standout female swimmer. In the Open freestyle relay where all schools place their 4 best swimmers against each other. Burnside not only won but broke a record in the process. The fastest time swum in a 25m pool. Hopefully we will go back to a night meeting in a 50m pool with Haka and a spectator packed crowd soon. Josiane Hill, Hanna Bartneck, Maddy Horton, Stacey Morgan congratulations.

13 titles is an exceptional team result. Hamish Inwood, Cameron Long, Ava Renner, Soomin Song, Ray Suzuki are other swimmers that deserve a mention.  Oli Heaton after five successive years of swimming at the highest level finished his swimming career at the school in style with another title.

Congratulations to all
